The rules of (fake) engagement . . .

Leah Martin has spent her life trying to avoid temptation. But she's sick of low-fat snacks, counting calories, and her hyper-critical mom. Fortunately, her popular new bakery keeps her good and distracted. But there aren't enough éclairs in the world to distract Leah from the hotness that is Sam Cooper - or the fact that he just told her mother that they're engaged . . . which is a big, fat lie.

Sam sometime speaks before he thinks. So what started out as defending Leah's date-ability to her judgmental mother soon turned into having a fiancée! Now the plan is to keep up the fake engagement, stay "just friends," and make Leah's family loathe him enough to just call the whole thing off. But Sam has an insatiable sweet tooth, not only for Leah's decadent desserts but her decadent curves. Her full lips. Her bright green eyes. Yep, things aren't going quite according to plan. Now Sam has to convince Leah that he's for real . . . before their little lie turns into one big, sweet disaster.

Excerpt Reveal:

Leah Martin nearly choked on her beer.
“What do you mean just pick one?” Her eyes scanned the entire bar before settling back on her friend. “Pick one what?”
“A guy, of course.”
Yeah, because it was just that simple. For Valerie, maybe. Even though they were close in size, Valerie always wore her weight better and turned heads everywhere she went. It probably helped that she had expressive doe eyes, wavy platinum-blond hair, and looked more like a cutesy toy poodle any guy would give their right testicle to take for a walk.
“I hate to tell you this, Val, but that only applies to women who look like you.” If Leah had to classify herself in that same frame of reference, she’d accurately describe herself as a Bulldog. Not only did she have the breed’s innate stubborn streak, but she also had the matching broad shoulders, wide hips, large chest, and—if she didn’t lose a few pounds—probably the same short life span. “Hippy brunettes with body image issues and smudged eyeliner don’t get the luxury of just pick one.”
“Oh, shut up,” Valerie said, rolling her eyes. “Your eyeliner looks fine.”
Yep, that about sums it up. My eyeliner is the only thing that looks decent on me tonight.
The little black dress she wore was just that—too little—and was slowly squeezing the life out of her. Especially after packing on ten extra pounds in the last few months. The sheath of fabric clung to every curve, as well as every bulge. Thank God they lived in Texas instead of Alaska or an Eskimo might’ve mistaken her for a seal and tried to skin her.
“So what’s your pleasure?” Valerie asked, not giving up. “Plenty of gorgeous men in here tonight.”
“Sure, if I squint.”
“Okay, stop being negative. You’re gorgeous, and lots of men love curvy women. I should know. Now pick one.”
No point in arguing with her. Once Valerie set her mind to something, she didn’t stop until the mission was accomplished. But the only time Leah had ever had her pick of anything was when she stood in front of the doughnut case at work, deciding between a chocolate éclair or a cream cheese danish.
“How am I supposed to know who to pick? It’s not like they wear signs on their foreheads saying, ‘I dig fat chicks.’”
Valerie shot her an exasperated look. “We’ll just establish a baseline for the kind of guy you want.”
“The kind of guy I’d want wouldn’t be hanging out in a bar called Rusty’s Bucket. In fact, I wouldn’t be here either if you hadn’t forced me to come.”
“Leah, you got dumped. Happens to all of us sooner or later.” Valerie’s voice softened as she reached for Leah’s hand. “It sucks, I know. But you’re always at work or upstairs in your apartment, which means you never leave that damn building. It’s not healthy. You can’t hide out forever.”
“I’m not hiding. I’ve just…been busy. I never imagined I’d be this swamped only a month after grand opening, and I’ve had to put in a lot of extra hours.” Leah caught Valerie’s I’m-not-buying-it expression. “Come on, Val. The wedding is tomorrow night. Everything has to be perfect because...well, you know.”
Valerie rolled her eyes. “Why does it even matter?”
“Because my reputation is at stake. It’s my cake the happy couple will be stuffing into each other’s mouths. They can choke on it for all I care, but it’s going to be the tastiest damn wedding cake they’ve ever eaten while keeling over. Everything has to go as smoothly as possible, and I have a million things to do before tomorrow night. I still need to—”
Valerie raised her hand to stop her from continuing. “What you need is a break. Let’s find some guys to dance with and have a few hours of fun before you lock yourself up in the cave again. Just humor me, okay? Now, what would say your dream guy’s most attractive quality would be?”
Leah sighed. “A pulse.”
“No vampires. Check. What else?”
“I don’t know. This is stupid.” Leah caught the disappointment in Valerie’s eyes and groaned. “Okay, fine. I guess I’d want…”
Her gaze sifted through the crowd, landing on two men at the bar. While the one standing motioned to the bartender, the other rolled up the sleeves of his blue button-down shirt, drawing Leah’s attention to his tanned, muscular forearms. When he finished, he bumped his elbow against the other man’s ribs and said something that made them both laugh. The warm, amused smile he wore sent a zing of pleasure through Leah, like she’d been given a intravenous shot of serotonin. Him. I’d want him.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Alison Bliss grew up in Small Town, Texas, but currently resides in the Midwest with her husband and two sons. With so much testosterone in her home, it's no wonder she writes "girl books." She believes the best way to know if someone is your soul mate is by canoeing with them because if you both make it back alive, it's obviously meant to be. Alison pens the type of books she loves to read most: fun, steamy love stories with heart, heat, laughter, and usually a cowboy or two. As she calls it, "Romance...with a sense of humor."

Review:

I live for Romance books. The dirty kind, if you know what I mean. I typically don't gravitate towards Romance books like this one cause I feel like they would be too fluffy for my liking and I would end up bored and regretting my choice of reading material. That was not the case with Size Matters. Once I read the synopsis, I was drawn in. I couldn't wait to see how I would react to this story and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Yes it was fluffy, obviously. But it was also hilarious that I found myself laughing out loud more than any other book I have ever read. Especially when Sam would make remarks towards Leah's brother's choice of clothing. *dying* Im seriously hooked on this series now and can't wait for the next one. I may need to get a gym membership before I do cause the constant mention of sweets in Size Matters had me gaining 5 lbs. I kid you not! Speaking of sweets..........

I asked Alison Bliss what her Top 5 favourite desserts were.

1. Ice box pies are one of my favorite desserts to make and my go-to treat if I’m looking for something rich and indulgent. There is no baking involved and they are basically a cross between a cream pie and a cheesecake. Win-win, if you ask me.

2. We always used to look forward to my husband’s grandmother visiting and bringing us her special homemade sponge candy. But before she passed away, she gave me the recipe and now I make it in her honor. It brings us wonderful memories.

3. My mother makes these moist pineapple-banana muffins that are out of this world. I love them. My kids love them. My husband hates them. But that only means more for us.

4. Russian teacakes are a longtime favorite of mine. As with anything rolled in powered sugar, they can be a little bit messy at times, but they are super simple to make and taste delicious.

5. Homemade fudge over popcorn is another favorite. Growing up, my mother made this treat on occasion, so it’s great to be able to continue the tradition with my own kids.

Great, now Im hungry again *sigh* off to the bakery, I go.

Excerpt Reveal:

“Look, we both know the other night was…”
“Incredible.”
She sighed. “Okay, yes, incredible, but also…”
“Passionate.”
“Can you let me finish?”
He smiled. “Fine, but first…” Taking her face in his hands he lowered his lips to hers. The surprise look in her eyes should have given him cause to reconsider, but the hell with it. It didn’t matter that he knew he’d crossed a line and he’d broken some sort of bro code; for the first time in his life, he was ready to go after what he wanted. And after the night they shared, he knew she wanted him to.
She closed her eyes and fell into him, and he deepened the kiss, savoring the taste of her peppermint lip gloss and sliding his fingers through her soft hair. Her hands were pressed against his chest, but she wasn’t pushing him away. Instead, they clutched the fabric of his T-shirt, drawing him even closer.
When he reluctantly broke away a moment later, he was happy to see Abby was as out of breath as he was. “Okay, now you can talk.”
“I don’t remember what I was going to say.” She sighed, resting her forehead against his chest. “What are we doing?”
He leaned back and, placing a finger under her chin, forced her gaze to his. “I’m doing what I should have done a long time ago. Abby, I know I should keep holding back how I feel for you because of Dean, but the truth is, that friendship isn’t worth giving up this chance with you. I’m not even sure I know my friend anymore, after how he treated you and Dani.”
“Jackson, I just got divorced. I’m not ready for…this. Whatever this is. I’m sorry my kissing you and…other things have been misleading, but I’m not sure I can do a relationship right now. Dani and I are starting over and rebuilding a life here.”
He nodded. “I’m not asking for anything except a chance. I know you’ve been through a lot. I know you may still…have feelings for Dean,” he said through clenched teeth. The idea that he might always have to compete for her full affections made him even more determined to prove that he was the right one for her. Had always been the right one.
She shook her head and started to say something, but he placed a finger to her lips.
“And that’s okay. I just want a chance to prove to you I would never hurt you the way he did. I don’t care how long it takes. Take your time. I’m not going anywhere, Abby. My love is not going anywhere.”
She swallowed hard and her eyes widened at his words. “I can’t promise I’ll ever be ready,” she whispered.
“I’ll keep waiting,” he said firmly. Then he smiled. “On one condition.”
She frowned. “Which is?”
“You and Dani come to the fall fair this weekend with Taylor and me.”
“No.”
“It won’t be a date,” he said quickly. “Just two friends hanging out.”
She sighed again. “I think we skipped over ‘friends,’ don’t you?” she asked.
“Well, then friends shouldn’t be that difficult,” he countered. He wasn’t about to let her push him away. Not when he was finally ready to show her how much he cared about her.
“Fine. But I don’t think friends sit on the same side of the table, so get over there,” she said, trying to nudge him out of the booth.
He stayed exactly where he was. “This friend does.”

Excerpt Reveal:

“You can’t jump.”
She narrows her eyes on me. “Of course I can.”
“Is it safe?”
My grip on her grows tighter and she steps close enough that I can feel the heat of her breasts brush against my ribs. “Lucas, do you trust me?”
“No.” The word comes out on a shaky whisper.
A gentle grin softens her face and with both her hands she works to relax my hold enough for her to slip free. Seconds later she turns, takes four long strides, and disappears off the rock cliff.
A holler that can only be described as guttural exhilaration echoes off the canyon walls and slices through the trees.
I race to the edge and there’s nothing but a circle of white bubbles marring the once shimmering pond.
I wait for her to surface, and just when I’m about to jump in and rescue her, her head pops up out of the water with a feral howl.
“That was amazing!” She waves at me. “The water is perfect!”
With adrenaline coursing through my veins, I allow myself a moment to wonder what it would be like to be as free as Shyann. Everything I do is weighed against the danger of doing it. The threat of blacking out always pulling me back to walk the safer, less risky side of any situation. But something about her makes me want to try harder, makes me want to take a risk like other twenty-five-year-old guys. The sound of her squealing lights a fire in my chest that has me wanting to jump.
Risking a blackout might be worth the few seconds of euphoria I haven’t felt since…I can’t remember.
I think of backing away and yelling for her to meet me at the truck, but something pulls me toward her. Part of me wonders if it’s nothing more than wanting to be close, to keep her safe, because she belongs to Mr. Jennings and I owe him. But even as the thought enters my mind, so does another.
I want her to like me.
I want her to see me as brave.
I want to know what it’s like to be normal.

Book Review:

I love when I pick up a new book and its nothing like I have ever read before. Split is so refreshingly unique that it will have you devouring page after page. Who needs sleep or bathroom breaks. Am I right!?! Lucas captured my heart but I craved those dark moments I got to spend with Gage. What women wouldn't want two men? I just want to bow down  to JB for throwing in an epic plot twist that had my jaw dropping, my eyes bulging and possibly a little drool dripping but lets just forget that I mentioned that last embarrassing statement, shall we. It's difficult for me to write this review because I don't want to spoil anything but every thought that comes to mind when I think of this book is a spoiler. *Sigh* I'm so glad I stayed away from early reviews and went into this blind because my mind was blown away, so I suggest you do the same. This book is a tad dark, but also sinfully sexy. I seriously loved this freaking book!! And if it isn't clear enough, I rated this beauty a 5/5 stars!! This is my first JB Salisbury book and I'm officially a huge fan and a future one clicker of this author.

EXCERPT

Tori froze a foot away, blinking at me. She didn’t speak. If she had a reason for coming in here, it looked like that reason just left her. She seemed lost. “Legs,” I probed, when she kept with the staring and not speaking routine. “Mm?” “What are you doin’ in here, babe?” I had no fucking idea what was going on, but unless Tori wanted to watch some chick grind all over me, she needed to get what she came for and step out. She wet her lips. I watched her neck work with a swallow. “You showed me your dick,” she stated. I felt my mouth twitch. Fuck yeah. Breathing a laugh, I relaxed back onto the bench, arms spread behind me and hands gripping the black leather cushion. I tipped my head to the side. “See that impression is stickin’,” I said. “What’s that got to do with this?” “You showed me your dick after I flashed you. That was your move.” “Yeah.” I nodded. What the fuck was she getting at? Tori smiled. Her sin-colored lips stretching slow. “This is mine,” she said, lifting her shoulders as if this shit she was declaring wasn’t a big deal, which it sure as fuck was. This is hers…Oh, fuck me. Fuck. Me. Tori moved closer. Whatever smirk I was wearing pulled from my mouth. That pressure built again, in my chest and lower. I shifted on the bench. “Legs,” I warned, my voice vibrating in my throat as I watched her walk toward me. “What’d I say about takin’ this shit places you can handle? Did you think this through?” I was willing to bet she didn’t. If she had and knew how this could play out, with her bent over and me buried deep, she wouldn’t be back here. “Shh.” Tori stopped in front of my knees. “If we talk, I won’t go through with this,” she admitted, sounding anxious. “And I doubt you’d be chattin’ up the girl who was supposed to be in here, so quit it. Just sit there. Shut up. And keep your hands to yourself.” “You know what you’re doin’?” I asked, looking up at her. “’Cause in this room I’m allowed to touch, babe. Rules are out there.” I tipped my chin at the door, keeping her gaze. “Not in here. In here, I’m participatin’. You don’t like that deal, you better quit now and think of another move, ’cause the second you start takin’ shit off, Legs, I’m on you.” “Then I guess I don’t need to worry,” Tori shot back, speaking with confidence and smiling again. The fuck did that mean? My brow tightened. “Say again?” “I don’t need to worry ’cause I’m not taking anything off, meaning you won’t be on me. I’m just dancing.” I stared at her for a beat. Then a laugh rumbled in my chest as I thought about how fucked she was. “What?” she asked, tilting her head all cute. “This is a really good move.” “Know it is. Not laughing ’cause of that.” “Then why are you laughing?” She brought her hands to her hips and studied me, looking on the verge of an attitude. Her eyes narrowed. “If you think I need to take my clothes off to win this bet, then you are mistaken, Jamie McCade. I know how you feel about me in this uniform. This is gonna kill you.” “Legs, hate to tell you this, but you’re wrong, babe. You gotta worry.” “And why’s that?” I dropped my arms and sat forward, elbows resting on my thighs. “You start dancin’ on me and I’m touching you,” I promised, watching her blink. “You start dancin’ anywhere in this room and I’m touching you. You don’t gotta strip, babe. I just threw that out there ’cause that’s where I thought this was headed. Telling me you’re makin’ a move and you’re makin’ it in a strip club, figured you’d be taking shit off, but honest to God, it don’t matter. Like I said before, rules are out there. Not in here. Only way I’m keeping my hands to myself is if I’m fuckin’ dead.” “These are my rules,” Tori countered, bending down to get closer. “And unless you want me to holler out for my new friend with the gold tooth who looks like he eats narcissistic assholes for breakfast, I suggest you follow them, Jamie.” I chuckled, knowing who she was talking about. Dude made sure I was clear on a few things before letting me back in here. Something I wasn’t sharing with Legs. “And what are these rules, babe?” I asked. She straightened and snapped, “I already told you. Sit there and shut up.” Tori put her hand on my shoulder and shoved, pushing me back until I was pressing against the bench again. Then keeping her grip there, she swung her knee up, braced it on the leather, and lowered herself onto my lap, lifting her other knee and boxing me in with it. I pulled in breath through my nose and curled my hands into fists on the cushion. “And the touching?” I asked, voice strained as I stared at the shape of her tits. They grew closer as she leaned forward, her hands shifting to hold on behind me, and my gaze snapped up to meet hers when her face got an inch away. “Beg for it,” she whispered. My eyes flickered wider. Hers brightened with impending victory. No shit. Tori was gonna let me touch, but I had to call it. I had to let her win. I had to fucking beg. Jesus. Why’d she have to be so good at this shit? I steadied my gaze, telling her as my head tilted back, “Think I’ll just enjoy the ride.”       hts-teaser-5     logo-rectangle-1-2400-x-1025J.Daniels is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Sweet Addiction series, the Alabama Summer series, and the Dirty Deeds series. Book Review: The Protector By Jodi Ellen Malpas

Synopsis: People think they have Camille Logan nailed: daddy's girl; beautiful, spoiled young woman with her father's bank balance to fund her lifestyle. But Camille is determined to have a life free from his strings. Out on her own, she's made mistakes, including one that found her clawing her way back after a stint in rehab and plenty of bad press. Now, after fighting so hard to be independent and happy, she finds her life threatened as a result of her father's ruthless business dealings. Caught between resentment and fear, Camille prepares herself for the measures her father will take to protect her. But nothing could prepare her for the ex-SAS sniper who crashes into her life.

Jake Sharp resides in his own personal hell. He was distracted from duty once before, and the consequences were devastating--both personally and professionally. He vowed never to let that happen again. Accepting the job of bodyguard to Camille Logan isn't the kind of distraction from his demons he should take. Women and Jake don't mix well, yet protecting the heiress seems the lesser of two evils. But Jake soon discovers that she isn't the woman she's perceived to be. She's warm, compassionate, her presence settling, and his duty to protect her soon goes deeper than a well-paid job, no matter how hard he fights it. He needs absolution. He comes to need Camille. But he knows he can't have both.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Review:  I'd like to start this review off by stating that this was my very first JEM book. I know, I know, don't judge me. I had heard mixed reviews about JEM's books from other bloggers in the past that I was a bit skeptical about picking up one of her books. However I'm really happy that I took a chance on The Protector cause I really enjoyed this story.

Yes the storyline may have been a tad cliche but I actually loved the fluff in this book. It didn't annoy me like I thought it would. It had really good plot twists and the sex scenes were scorching. I literally had to fan myself over how Alpha Jake was *Sigh* Seriously.... I need a Jake in my life! *Insert googly eyes emoji here* Her writing was incredible. The only complaint I have about The Protector is that it was extremely hard for me to be emotionally invested in these characters. I really tried but for some reason they didn't feel real in this bloggers heart which is why I rated this book a 4 out of 5 starts.

“5 stars!!! Read this book, guys!! Archer’s Voice was one of the most heartwarming and uniquely beautiful stories I have ever read.  Mia Sheridan’s ability to convey strong emotions and vivid imagery through her writing is absolutely captivating.  This was a gorgeous tale of survival and the healing power of love.  I strongly encourage everyone to read it!!  Without a doubt, it is now one of my top-favorite books!” –Aestas’ Book Blog

“5 stars! Flawlessly and poignantly written, Bree and Archer’s heart-wrenching but truly beautiful love story touched my heart in so many exquisite ways, I felt ruined at the end of it…. In a world that celebrates ‘bad boys’ and their antics, Archer Hale stands as a God among men.” –Natasha is a Book Junkie

“5 stars! Best book of the year…. From intense sweetness to intense hurt and jealousy to sorrow and heartache (and not necessarily in that order), this story has it all.  And this author does it right!” –Maryse’s Book Blog
